Welcome to This Is a Newsletter!

Where flash fiction meets memes and observational humor about pop culture, current events, and urban millennial life.

My name is Sam, and I’m a recovering advertising copywriter and former academic. For the past decade, I have chased a master’s degree and jobs, and I lived in Los Angeles, Boston, and Chicago, before currently residing in Toronto. I have racked up many observations about the banalities of urban life. And after countless hours upon years of passive internet addiction, I also developed an irrational love of memes and view them as a perfect capsule of pop culture and the current moment.

Since I spend 40+ hours a week writing for an assortment of clients, I began this newsletter as a creative release. So I took my formal education in political theory as well as my copywriting chops and distilled them into weekly bits of flash fiction and pithy posts.

I like to think of myself as a high-brow shitposter, a literary troll.

If you want to laugh, think, and join me on existential rants, let’s hop down the rabbit hole and into the abyss hand-in-hand.

Join me on Notes, and I will share random thoughts and even sincere post about my interests: Music, nature, cooking, traveling, and my girlfriend’s undeniably adorable beagle. (I can’t spend 24/7 trapped behind the facade of detached irony).

If and when anyone wants to pay for my work, I want to include you—the reader and my audience—in a collaborative content creation process.

Here’s what you’ll get:

  1. I will monitor bi-weekly discussion threads where I will entertain topic suggestions, solicit feedback and/or roasting.

  2. Whatever topic I select from my reader suggestion will turn into an essay that’s exclusive to paying subscribers. (I will aim for 1-2 of these a month.)

  3. I’ll also run a weekly AMA/life advice mailbag every Friday.

Whaddya say, friend? Join me and we will explore what it means to truly eat, pray, and love.
