I was interested by the Homestead reference so I read half a PBS article on it and, damn, people used to be hardcore. Literally a mini D-Day invasion over a steel mill. Pinkerton's storming the beaches of Fort Frick.
Walmart and Amazon are case studies in how terribly broken the working class has become. People either stomach it because they're screwed or they get out as soon as they can. The employment market is so mobile that there's no personal investment that would encourage people to strike or fight for the ground they have.
I would almost call it being spiritually homeless. Who in this day and age is actually willing to die for the life they have?
