This is a fine summary. Imagine trying to rewrite this mess as Shakespearean when it’s really Fawlty Towers.

But there’s one aspect to it that I’d never fully appreciated. Kamala Harris’ reticence was her Trump card. She knew that Biden would never make it through a second term, while she couldn’t make it through a 60 Minutes interview without creative editing. If Biden had just kept awake till November 5th, Harris would probably now be President. There are possibilities there that surely haven’t been lost on J. D. Vance.

I wouldn’t put it past them that this could’ve been their plan/hope but it was ruined by Biden’s debate performance. Kamala seemed like she was the party’s preference in 2020 given she fits their identity politics branding and she’ll play ball with their policy agenda, but she flopped in the primaries. Was this their way to shoehorn her into the office given that they didn’t even want to hold a primary after Biden stepped down? I can’t affirmatively answer but I no longer underestimate their level of cynicism.
