So damning of the way that we have come to accept complete incompetence and outright corruption without questioning is there a better way. Arguably it was ever so in the large old metropoles like NYC, Boston and Chicago.

Loved this “None of these people—the defective gentry, crystal-vision narcissists with some latent retail talent, bagmen for various industry cartels, MAGA crybullies—will give you anything resembling what you want”. Yet they keep getting elected to office!

It’s the politics of dueling sadism. As long as you’re convinced the other side is worse and you hate them more than you dislike your own party, it’s easier to rationalize all the bad things “your side” does. It’s textbook fascist mentality, and while the right is worse at this, Dem partisans are closer to this outlook than they’d feel comfortable admitting to themselves.

I was explaining to a Polish colleague how the electoral college works and how fucked up it is and concluded by saying how if the Dems had any smarts they would have made changes like DC statehood and splitting CA into N and S but their arrogance and stupidity results in where we are today, beholden to some 18th century rules.
